Trainscape

Minnesota artists Amy Baur and Brian Bolton of InPlainSight Art studio created a 146-foot ceramic tile and glass prism mural. “Trainscape” welcomes visitors in the Carriageway and engages them with the history of Minnesota and Union Depot. Each digitally printed ceramic tile contains a center glass prism to capture and reflect light. “Trainscape” is a $150,000 commission.

Union Depot to Participate in St. Paul Art Crawl with Free Visual Arts Exhibits, Performances by Ballet Minnesota, VocalEssence, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and More

Union Depot in downtown St. Paul will participate in the October 9-11 St. Paul Art Crawl with visual arts exhibits as in years past but this year the historic venue will add live dance and musical performances by many of the Twin Cities’ most respected companies.  The dance line up includes Ballet Minnesota, Sendero Flamenco and Kala Vandanam Classical Indian Dance, all of whom have studio space on Fourth Street around the corner from Union Depot.

During the event, Union Depot also will be a Saint Paul Classical Music Crawl site with performances by VocalEssence, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Apollo Master Chorale and The Schubert Club: Sybarite 5.  The visual art exhibit will feature the work of more than 30 artists in a variety of mediums, including noted illustrator Pam Kirton and painter Marcie Richie, who both had their art chosen to be on the Art Crawl postcard, and photographer Charles Hensley.  The visual arts exhibit and regular Art Crawl hours at Union Depot are 6-10 p.m., Friday, October 9; noon-8 p.m., Saturday, October 10; and noon-5 p.m., Sunday, October 11.

Below is a schedule of dance and musical performances:

Dance:  The dance events will feature a trio of 45-minute performances by Ballet Minnesota, Sendero Flamenco and Kala Vandanam Classical Indian Dance in what they are calling “The Lowertown Dance Showcase” to reflect their collaborative spirit and studio location in a space around the corner from Union Depot.   Ballet Minnesota presents its 10th annual fall concert with the company performing eight works choreographed by Artistic Director Andrew Rist using classical, contemporary and operatic music in the Waiting Room at Union Depot.  The other dance companies will present performances by instructors and students.  Sendero Flamenco will perform the lively and sensual dance form. Kala Vandanam Classical Indian Dance will delight audiences with its exquisite performances of traditional Bharatanatyam dance. Performances times are 7-10 p.m., Friday, October 9 and 2-5 p.m., Sunday, October 11. Music:  Union Depot will participate in the Saint Paul Classical Music Crawl with a series of live performances from noon-8 p.m., Saturday, October 10.  All performances will feature 15 minutes of music repeated four times, on the hour and half hour.  Performances include:

  • Noon-2 p.m.: Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra
  • 2-4 p.m.: Apollo Master Chorale
  • 4-6 p.m.: The Schubert Club: Sybarite 5
  • 6-8 p.m.: VocalEssence
